Biography

Dr Alex McLellan graduated from the University of Sydney in 2005.  He completed cardiology training at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne and undertook a fellowship in cardiac imaging at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne.

Alex commenced PhD studies in 2012 under the guidance of Professor Peter Kistler and Professor Jonathan Kalman at the Alfred and Royal Melbourne Hospitals, where he has also undertaken clinical training in cardiac electrophysiology and device implantation.

Alex’s PhD studies have centered on strategies to improve atrial fibrillation ablation outcomes, and include assessment of the prognostic impact of cardiac fibrosis (scar tissue) identified with cardiac MRI on AF ablation outcomes, an international multi-centre randomised controlled trial comparing two common AF ablation strategies, and assessment of the impact of a novel blood pressure treatment (renal denervation) on electrical and structural cardiac remodelling.

Alex won the Young Investigator award at the Asia-Pacific Heart Rhythm Society Conference in 2013, and also presented as a finalist in the best abstract award at this meeting.  Alex is fortunate to be supported by a co-funded National Health and Medical Research Council/ National Heart Foundation postgraduate scholarship and a Bright Sparks scholarship from the Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute.
